Research & Insights

As a civil society organisation, The Turing Africa AI Center conducts independent, rigorous research on AI's impact on African societies, economies, and governance. Our research is designed to inform policymakers, regulators, industry, and the public โ€” ensuring that AI development in Africa is evidence-based, inclusive, and accountable.

Our Research Focus

Algorithmic Justice & Fairness in African Contexts

Investigating how AI systems โ€” particularly in credit scoring, lending, hiring, and public service delivery โ€” affect different demographic groups across Africa. Developing fairness metrics calibrated for African populations, not imported Western benchmarks.

AI Governance & Regulatory Frameworks

Researching effective AI governance models for African jurisdictions. Comparative analysis of international frameworks (EU AI Act, BoG CISD Annex E, NIST AI RMF, ISO 42001) and their applicability to African contexts.

AI & Socio-Economic Development

Examining AI's impact on employment, financial inclusion, healthcare access, education outcomes, and economic development across the continent.

Public Understanding of AI

Studying African citizens' mental models, trust levels, and understanding of AI systems โ€” particularly those making significant decisions about their lives.
